Roberto Fainstein, Ph.D. Geophysics Advisor & SEG Emeritus Professional Biography: Roberto Fainstein, Ph.D., Rice University 1979, is a Geophysics and Geology Advisor with more than 45years experience with the International Oil Industry, mainly with Petrobras S.A., Atlantic Richfield International and Schlumberger. His career in Petrobras comprised resistivity and seismic exploration in the Brazilian jungles (five years) and several years at sea during the very beginning of offshore exploration. He was Chief Geophysicist of the REMAC Project the first comprehensive survey of the entire Brazilian Continental Margin (1972-1975). At that time, through his work at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution he published the first suite of magnetic maps for all basins offshore Brazil and a series of multi-measurement integration papers on the Equatorial Atlantic Margin and Eastern Brazil Continental Margins. Upon return to Brazil in 1999 he was responsible for the design and implementation of the highly praised 2D/3D Brazil 99/2000 multiclient regional seismic programs that led to the significant discoveries in deepwater offshore Brazil, both in the post-salt and in the pre-salt sequences. Prior to this return program in Brazil he had contributed many oil and gas discoveries in Southeast Asia while with Atlantic Richfield International Oil & Gas Company these in Northwest Java along the Thousand Islands trend and in the East Java Sea, particularly the finding and development of Pagerungan Gas Field, the largest domestic gas provider of Indonesia. Afterwards moving to Schlumberger (Geco-Prakla) he designed and implemented the still very marketable Southeast Asia multi-client portfolio of WesternGeco that led to significant discoveries in the Natuna Sea and Makassar Strait in the Sunda Shelf, and with wildcat discoveries in Arafura Sea and offshore Irian Jaya in the eastern Archipelago deepwater, contributed also with the very first deep-water seismic papers and co-authored the “Seismic Atlas off Southeast Asia and Australia”. In 2002 in the now highly praised interview “Sub-Salt Could be Sweet” that was published by Petroleum Economist he accurately predicted, five years in advance the deep-water Tupi discovery that led to the chain of pre-salt eventful discoveries in the Santos and Campos Basin. This major achievement was based upon his regional deepwater mapping assessment of the Brazil 99/2000 program. His pioneering studies linking the post-salt and pre-salt plays of West Africa and Brazil are described in a number of papers, both in the Equatorial margin basins without salt and in the Atlantic Margin Salt basins proper. From 2007 to 2011 he worked in India having received a ‘Business Innovator Award” for his E & P on the “De-Risking of Deepwater Andaman Sea” and published extensively in sub-basalt areas offshore India and worldwide. Moving to Saudi Arabia he coordinated the UniQ Project a broadband, high-resolution, multi-azimuth, forefront project in rock physics and on seismic inversion in extensions of Ghawar Field (world’s largest oil field) delineating conventional and un-conventional reservoirs. Worked also with the uncovering of the pre-salt sequences of Red Sea. More recently back in India was involved in projects in the East Coast with modern broadband technology. Type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity are complex disorders that constitute major public health problems. The evidence for familial aggregation of both T2D and obesity is substantial. To date, more than 150 genetic loci are associated with the development of monogenic, syndromic, or multifactorial forms of T2D or obesity; many within lipid and carbohydrate metabolism pathways. SNPs located in or near FTO, MC4R, MC3R, POMC, LEP, LEPR, PLIN1, APOA5, LIPC, FABP2, INSIG2, IRS1, GIPR, ADBR2, ADRB3, UCP1, RETN, ADIPOQ, IL6, PPARG, TCF7L2, and CLOCK, among others, are implicated in both diabetes and obesity gene networks, pleomorphic with nutritional and metabolic traits. A personalized nutritional approach, based not only on phenotypic traits but also on genetic make-up, may help to control body weight and obesity. Recent advances in nutrigenetics, bioinformatics and genome-wide association metabolomics studies are set to unleash a revolution in personalized nutrition. In this symposium, we discuss the evidence concerning the genetic contribution to individual risk of T2D and obesity, and explore the potential role of nutritional and environmental mechanisms. We also explain how genetics, epigenetics, and environment are likely to interact to define the individual risk of disease; through analyzing the results of a number of recent human clinical trial studies that use genetics to personalize treatment plans for obesity, metabolic syndrome, and diabetes management. The aim of these studies was to determine the impact of a targeted, precision treatment program on reducing a patient’s future risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Despoina Iatridou graduated in 2000 from Veterinary School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece. After her graduation, she set up her own veterinary practice in Greece, where she worked for more than seven years as a veterinary practitioner, before leaving for Brussels. Since February 2010, she has been working in the FVE Office as a veterinary policy officer. Her duties involve monitoring of legislation of the European Union and initiatives related mainly to veterinary education, veterinary medicines, antimicrobial resistance, One Health, animals used for scientific purposes. Qiuping Zhang has her expertise in nesprin family research in cardiovascular biology field, specifically on understanding the complex roles of nesprin-1 and -2, family members of multi-isomeric scaffolding proteins, in regulating normal and pathological processes in the heart and muscle. She has extensive studies on the role of nesprins in myoblast differentiation and function as well as mutations in nesprin-1 or -2 in association with Emery Dreifuss muscular dystrophy and dilated cardiomyopathy. Her current research is focusing on defining the roles of nesprins in cardiac cell function by determining the functional significance of novel nesprin-1 and -2 mutations on the linker of nucleoskeleton-and-cytoskeleton complex that connects the nuclear envelope to the actin cytoskeleton, and also identifying novel roles for nesprins in the sarcomere. This may reveal novel pathways that contribute to the development of cardiac cell dysfunction and cardiomyopathy.

In the last 10 years, my research focus has been the desert truffle Terfezia boudieri that forms mycorrhizal association with its host plant Helianthemum sessiliflorum. I am studying the fungus at several levels including physiology, ecology and molecular biology. I participate in a comprehensive project to sequence the entire genomes of 23 fungi including our two desert truffle species, in the frame of The European Community Sequencing Program entitled "Exploring the Genome Diversity of Mycorrhizal Fungi to Understand the Evolution and Functioning of Symbiosis in Woody Shrubs and Trees"

I also study secondary metabolite biosynthesis in plants, with emphasis on aroma volatiles biosynthesis. This is carried mainly in fruits at both the biochemical and molecular levels. We use tomato as a model system to identify genes and important traits. Metabolic engineering offers a solution for improving the taste and aroma of tomato.

Dr. Afia Zafar is a Professor and Consultant Microbiologist and also Chairperson, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, The Aga Khan University, Pakistan. Currently, she is working as Consultant microbiologist and have 20-22 years of experience in Infection control. Prof. Ben Zhong TANG is Stephen K. C. Cheong Professor of Science, and Chair Professor of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His research interests include macromolecular chemistry, materials science, and biomedical theranostics. He is spearheading the research on aggregation-induced emission (AIE), a topic ranked no. 2 in the areas of Chemistry and Materials Science by Thomson Reuters in its report on Research Fronts 2015, and also 2016. Dr. George Nemer earned his B.Sc degree in Biology from the American University of Beirut (1992). He received his Ph.D. degree in Molecular Pharmacology from the Université de Montréal (2002).He received many scholarships from Pfizer Canada and Gibco-Ingelheimer for his work on transcription factors in heart development and diseases. His major area of research is cardiac development and congenital heart diseases. He co-authors more than 35 publications in that field including a Cell paper in 2001, which made the cover of this prestigious journal. Since moving to AUB in 2002, Dr. Nemer has focused on the genetics of congenital heart disease building a DNA registry with Dr. Bitar, the first of its nature in the region. The identification of GATA4 by his team as one of the most important player in congenital heart disease earned him a reputation in the field that was translated in more than 100 citations of the article since its publication in 2006. Besides the focus on research, Dr. Nemer helped in re-launching the new PhD program in Basic Sciences and is a strong supportive of students’ research activities. Since 2002, more than 25 students earned their MSc degree in Biochemistry under his supervision, most of them are pursuing their PhD studies in the USA, and Canada.

Structural and functional studies of antiviral drug toxicity Antiviral drugs based on nucleoside analogs are effective inhibitors for viral reverse transcriptase and RNA polymerase, thus have been successfully used in treating HIV and HCV infections. With prolonged patients life span, the success of the drugs now has to be balanced with their drug toxicity. One of the major target of nucleoside analogs is human mitochondrial DNA polymerase, Pol Y. Because drug efficacy is not completely correlated with drug toxicity, we believe there is exploitable difference in designing potent, low toxic antiviral reagents. To reveal the structural differences between viral target protein and human adverse reaction target, we embarked on structural and functional studies of replicating human mitochondrial DNA polymerase or stalled by antiviral drugs. My laboratory determined the first crystal structures of human Pol Y holoenzyme. Recently, we determined structures of ternary complex of Pol Y-DNA with a substrate or an antiHIV reagent, zalcitabine, lamivudine or emtricitabine. These structures provided unprecedented insight in Pol Y mediated antiviral drug toxicity. As Pol Y mutations are associated with multisystem disorders, the structures have been widely used by basic scientists as well as clinicians to understand the detrimental effects of the mutations.

He also has done research at NIDDK, NIH in the summers of 1989, 1990 and 1991. In 1994 he switched his research interest from Spectroscopy to Nanotechnology. His special synthetic methods of nanomaterials include: Sonochemistry, Microwave Superheating, Sonoelectrochemistry, and Reactions under Autogenic Pressure at Elevated Temperatures (RAPET). Since 2004 he is mostly focused on the applications of nanomaterials. Gedanken has published 782 per-reviewed manuscripts in international journals, and has applied for 38 Patents. His H-Index is 85 according to the WEB of SCIENCE. Gedanken has served as the Department Chairman as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences at Bar-Ilan University. My research is aimed at understanding the roles of the innate and adaptive immune systems in health and disease. The organs of my interest are the two specialized filtration units, glomeruli and blood-brain barrier, of the kidney and brain respectively. Recently, our understanding of the immune system has undergone a substantial paradigm shift: researchers now recognize that the innate immune system, the body’s first line of defense, assesses the level of danger of a particular event and initiates an adaptive immune response that subsequently confers protection. My studies focus on the role of an important arm of the innate immune system, the complement cascade in inflammatory conditions such as glomerulonephritis and lupus. For both disease conditions, the perfect therapy remains an enigma. Using a gamut of techniques, we are attempting to define the molecular mechanisms involved and the resulting behavioral aberrations. Once molecular targets are identified, therapeutic strategies will be defined.

Dr. Bharat Bhushan is an Ohio Eminent Scholar and the Howard D. Winbigler Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering ans nd the Director of the Nanoprobe Laboratory for Bio- & Nanotechnology and Biomimetics (NLB2) and affiliated faculty in John Glenn College of Public Affairs at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Bhushan came to OSU in 1991 after a 15-year career in industry, working primarily for IBM Almaden Research Center. A professor with diverse interests, Dr. Bhushan’s works in biomimetic interface science, surface engineering, nanotribology, and materials research. His research has focused on scanning probe techniques in the interdisciplinary areas of bio/nanotribology, bio/nanomechanics and bio/nanomaterials characterization and applications to bio/nanotechnology, and biomimetics. Dr. Bhushan spent the 2013-2014 year working as an ASME Science Fellow in Congress. Dr Martins completed his undergraduate Science degree at the University of Western Australia in 1984, then completing a MSc in Clinical Biochemistry in 1986.
